LIFE22-CET-SET-HEAT Project Press Conference in Bucharest, Romania

Energy transition and decarbonisation of district heating systems through the integration of renewable heat sources is a complex but necessary challenge.

Bucharest, Romania, April 8, 2024

Energy transition and decarbonisation of district heating systems through the integration of renewable heat sources is a complex but necessary challenge.

The SET_HEAT project aims to mobilise district heating companies in EU Member States for planning activities focused on strategic development and modernisation, reconfiguration and decarbonisation of district heating systems, taking into account renewable and waste heat sources and, not least, the creation of sustainable local ecosystems. Another challenge is stakeholder outreach and creation of sustainable local ecosystems, and collaborative networks to face dynamically changing business environment and disruptions of business-as-usual approaches. The press conference in Bucharest dedicated to the LIFE22-CET-SET_HEAT "Supporting energy transition and decarbonisation in the heating sector" project was organised to facilitate this task.

The Director General of the Bucharest Municipal Thermoenergy Company (CMTEB), Adrian Teodorescu, said at a press conference on Monday that in the context of discussions on energy efficiency, the creation of intelligent, decarbonised heating systems with multiple heat sources, excluding fossil fuels, is urgently needed.

"It is crucial that in the shortest possible time, district heating companies and government stakeholders engage in a collaborative planning process to develop investment strategies that will ensure an efficient energy transition of existing plants to smart, decarbonised systems with multiple sources of fossil fuel-free heat. Energy transition and decarbonisation of district heating systems is a complex but necessary challenge. First and foremost we opt for increased energy security and significant reduction of CO2 emissions. In a word, for a cleaner and healthier environment for all. This is a shared responsibility we all have - public authorities, heating companies and citizens."

"The 2021-2027 funding programme of the Ministry of Investment and European Projects aims to support measures for the integration of green, clean energy, which will allow both the achievement of the climate targets announced by the European Union and the interconnectivity of systems using green energy, as stipulated in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Change Plan 2021 - 2030. We are with you in this project, being open to collaboration and we announce that we are already acting now to simplify the process of accessing funding. We wish you success in implementing the project!" said Răzvan Popescu, State Secretary at the Ministry of European Investment and Projects.

"Renewable energy is the future. The transition to green energy is an irreversible process for which we must make every effort to bring the latest technology to the whole thermal energy system. Renewable resources are unlimited, and this type of project in which we have to identify solutions, financing solutions and technical solutions will identify the best one for the thermo-energy system and not only for Bucharest, because there is no alternative. Termoenergetica, Energetica Servicii, the profile companies present here will be able to find together a solution for the centralized system, because Bucharest, like any large capital, cannot exist without a stratgic plan. The solutions can be implemented in Bucharest or can be extended to other systems in other cities," said Sorin Chiriță, external consultant of the Set Heat project.

"I see energy production in the future as follows: strip production from geothermal and biomass, with peak consumption to be covered by turbines and cogeneration engines, based on a mix of gas and hydrogen. Green energy must be storable and usable. Indeed, in this way, Bucharest can become the Copenhagen of the East" said Claudiu Cretu, general manager of Electrocentrale București.

The conference was also attended by representatives of the Bucharest City Hall through Mr. Cătălin Aflat, Investment Director, the General Director of the Municipal Company Energetica Servicii Mr. Anton Cristian, the Executive Director of the Intercommunity Development Association for Thermal Energy Bucharest-Ilfov Mr. Andrei Creci, advisors from the Ministry of Energy, a representative of the Embassy of Denmark in Romania and other representatives of various interested bodies: the Association of Energy Auditors, the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, the Coalition for the Circular Economy, etc.
